The Borough of Broxbourne is in the Lea Valley, on the Hertfordshire / Essex border, 18 miles due north of the City of London. It was formed from the ancient parishes of Cheshunt, southern end, and Hoddesdon, to the north. Theses two places have very different histories.
Broxbourne was the ancient parish in which Hoddesdon was a secondary township. When Hoddesdon developed a market it expanded and eclipsed Broxbourne. Broxbourne is still a separate settlement and the railway station for both places.
